Mitochondria contain many copies of their own DNA (mtDNA). If a pathogenic mtDNA mutation is present in the majority of these copies, mitochondrial energy production is compromised. In more than half of the mtDNA mutation carriers, skeletal muscles are affected, which has a large negative impact on their quality of life. Autologous transplantation of myogenic stem cells called mesoangioblasts (MABs) is a proposed solution for these patients, but healthy MABs are necessary for re-administration, which is only possible for approximately half of the mtDNA mutation carriers. In this thesis, we aimed to investigate methods for reducing the mutation load of patient-derived MABs to levels suitable for us in autologous stem cell therapy (below 15%).

I helped develop an online cultural humility training course for healthcare professionals in partnership with the Society for Gynecologic Oncology. To create the teaching plan and course materials, I conducted systematic and scoping reviews to identify important topics related to LGBTQ+ health. Additionally, I performed qualitative research using digital ethnography to explore the root causes of health disparities in LGBTQ+ communities, including their primary health risks and related outcomes. Throughout this process, I collaborated with a diverse team of medical professionals, academics, and public health specialists to create the course.

I contributed to a report that explored the interactions between LGBTQ+ cancer patients from underrepresented populations and their healthcare providers, focusing on their health behaviors and making recommendations for improved care pathways. I oversaw the performance tracking of the OUT Survey across various social media platforms, utilizing Sprout Social, and monitored distribution efforts from key partner organizations. I liaised with stakeholders to gather critical information regarding organizational missions and actions within the public health sphere. Additionally, I played a role in data collection and determining performance metrics for the final report. To enhance community outreach, I attended the 2021 New York City Pride March as a representative of the organization.
